Dadiotis, Nikolaos (Nick)

1943 – 2010

Nikolaos (Nick) Dadiotis passed away suddenly in his home in Saskatoon. He will be sadly missed by his wife Helen Dadiotis; his sister Polyxenia Dadiotis (Constance Leventoyiannis) of New Tiryns, Greece; his brother Greg Dadiotis (Susan Tran) of Airdrie, Alberta; daughters Cathy (Don) McConkey and their children Megan, Cailie, and Jacob of Calgary, and Maria Dadiotis (Adam Johnson) of Vancouver; and his sons Vageli Dadiotis (Sarah Yeaman) of Calgary, and John Dadiotis of Saskatoon. Nick was predeceased by his parents, Aikaterine and Evangelos Dadiotis and his brother John Dadiotis.

Nick always took great pride in his Greek heritage. He loved cooking his favorite Greek dishes, playing and coaching soccer, fishing, his Chevy trucks, and the possibility of winning big in lotteries and raffles. No matter where he went, Nick always made friends with his warmth and his big, unforgettable smile. He will be particularly remembered for his generosity, his enjoyment of socializing, and his love for family and friends. Nick’s favorite places were in the kitchen cooking up a great feast for his guests or by the lake fishing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Greek Orthodox Church in Saskatoon or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The family invites you to the prayer service on Sunday, January 2, 2011, at 7 pm at the Saskatoon Funeral Home, and to the funeral service at the Greek Orthodox Church (8th St. & Dufferin Ave.) at 11 a.m. the following day. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery following the service. Arrangements are entrusted to the Saskatoon Funeral Home.

Danabassis (née Leakos), Evangeline (Vangie)

1926 – 1992

The death of Evangeline (Vangie) Danabassis age 66 years of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan occurred at Royal University Hospital on Monday, October 5, 1992. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 8 at 2:00 p.m. from the Komissis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church (1020 Dufferin Avenue) with Rev. Father John Nikolaou officiating. A Prayer Service will be held Wednesday evening, October 7th at 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Saskatoon Funeral Home (corner of 4th Avenue at 25th Street).

Vangie is survived by her five children: Cathy (Manny) Maragos of Saskatoon, Stephanie (George) Birlirakis of Saskatoon, Peter (Shelley) Danabassis of Saskatoon, Michael Danabassis of Saskatoon and Anne Danabassis of Vancouver, BC; her three grandchildren: Andrea Maragos, Kristy Danabassis and Katona Danabasis; one brother, Spero (Georgia) Leakos of Saskatoon; one sister in law, Jeanne Leakos of Saskatoon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Danabassis in 1985; by her father, Steve Leakos in 1975; by her mother, Agatha Leakos in 1965; and her brother, Dr. James Leakos in 1991.

Vangie was born on May 28, 1926 in Vancouver, BC and at an early age moved with her family to Moose Jaw, and in 1931 moved to make their home in Saskatoon. She attended Victoria Elementary School, Albert Elementary School, and Buena Vista Elementary School and graduated from Nutana Collegiate.

Vangie enjoyed playing basketball in high school and later played with the Adilman Aces for a number of years. She loved music of all kinds. Vangie was an accomplished violinist and was a member of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra for many years.

She married James Danabassis on July 3, 1949, whom she met while visiting in Vancouver. Vangie and Jim had been involved in the restaurant and hotel industry in Saskatoon and Sparwood, BC for many years. She took great pride in her vocation of cooking, which she truly enjoyed.

She had a genuine interest in people and was there to help and listen whenever it was needed. Vangie was an active member of the Saskatoon Greek community and the Daughters of Penelope.

Vangie was dearly loved and will be fondly remembered by her family and many friends. In lieu of flowers. Memorial Donations would be appreciated to the Saskatoon Cancer Centre, 20 Campus Drive, Saskatoon S7N 4H4 of the Saskatoon United Way, 201 336 5th Avenue, North. Saskatoon S7K 2P4.

Danabassis, James

1924 – 1985

The death of James Danabassis, age 61 years of 435 Sylvian Crescent, Saskatoon, occurred in a local hospital on August 21, 1985.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 23 at 1:30 p.m. from Koimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, 8th Street and Dufferin Avenue conducted by Rev. Father John Nikolaou.  Prayers will be said on Thursday, August 22 at 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Saskatoon Funeral Home.

Surviving are his wife, Evangeline, and family, Cathy (Manolis) Maragos, Stephanie (George) Birlirakis, Peter (Shelley) Danabassis, Michael Danabassis and Annie Danabassis all of Saskatoon; two grandchildren, Andrea Maragos and Kristy Danabassis; his mother, Katina Danabassis in Greece; a sister, Nezo (George) Nikoloudis in Greece; three brothers, Dimitrious in Greece and John (Rita) and Peter (Margaret) both of Saskatoon; 16 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Petros, and two brothers, Michael, and Stelios.

Mr. Danabassis was born in Hydra, Greece on March 18, 1924. He served in the Greek Merchant Marines during World War II and in 1949 came to Canada and settled in Saskatoon. Here, he became involved as a restauranteur. He was a member of the Ahepa Lodge and had served as President of the Saskatoon Chapter and was a member of the Saskatoon Greek Orthodox community.  At the time of his death, Mr. Danabassis was proprietor of the Colonial Motel, Olympia Restaurant, and Crackers Restaurant.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Research Fund c/o Cancer Clinic, University Hospital, Saskatoon would be appreciated. Interment will take place in the Greek Orthodox section of Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.

Danabassis, John
1938 – 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, John Danabassis. John passed away peacefully at his residence on February 3, 2022, after a valiant battle with cancer.

John was born on February 21, 1938, in Hydra, Greece to Petros and Katina Danabassis. His memory will be cherished by his family: wife Rita; son Petros and granddaughters, Aritee and Mikaela of Calgary AB; daughter Katina (Jason) and grandchildren Jaeson and Aretehya of Calgary AB; his sister Nezo and family of Athens Greece; his brother Peter (Margaret) and family of Saskatoon, SK; and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Dimitri (James) and Michalis.

At the age of 15, John immigrated to Saskatoon to join his brother Dimitri. This is where he began his career working in the hospitality industry. A culinary legend, John developed his craft working at restaurants and hotels in various cities across the US and Canada. Finally settling back in Saskatoon with his family. John loved to share stories, listen, and dance to his favorite music, but his greatest passion was oil painting his homeland, Greece.

John lived and loved fearlessly, he will be remembered for his strength of spirit and his dedication and love to his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Saskatoon Food Bank and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.

A special thank you to Palliative Home Care Services for their compassionate care and support.

The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday February 8, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. from Park Funeral Home, 311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon.

Dangas, Sotirios
1923 – 2011

It is with sadness that the family announces that the death of Sotirios Dangas occurred at Luther Care Home on Tuesday March 1st, 2011. Sotirios is survived by two sons and their families: son Jim, his wife Toula and their children Sotirios Steven, Hrisoula Christy, Kostantinos Dean and son Markos, his wife Demetra and their children Hrissula, and Sophia (James) Wright; three great grandchildren: Marko (Dominic) Wright, Donald Wright, and Caleb Wright; as well as the Papagiorgios and Antoniadis nephews and niece of Saskatoon and numerous nieces and nephews living in Greece. He was predeceased by his wife Hrissula in 1995 as well as his brother and sister.

Sotirios was born to parents Markos and Katerini on September 17th, 1923, in Angelohori Greece. He grew up during difficult times due to the Great War and even with schools being closed and no formal education, he excelled at mathematics always being able to do calculations in his head instantly. Working on the family farm became his vocation.

During the civil strife in Greece following WWII, he met Hrissula, his wife to be and they were married in 1949. They made Angelohori their home and began to raise their family. Sotirios spent three years in the Greek National Army as a horse trainer returning to farming in 1951.

Son Jim immigrated to Canada in 1972 and son Markos followed in 1980. In 1985 Sotirios and Hrissula left their homeland to join their sons in Saskatoon SK Canada, which became their home for the remainder of their lives.

Sotirios was a faithful church member. He loved gardening and was particularly skilled at grafting fruit trees. He was a very friendly and entertaining person, always there with a handshake and a story. He was a friendly face as host at son Jim’s restaurant for many years.

Family was the central part of his life and he loved family gatherings, especially times spent with his grandchildren. The love of his life was Hrissula, his wife, and many will remember seeing them walking to and from the restaurant always hand in hand just like a young couple in love.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Luther Care Home for their compassionate care which they were able to provide despite some language barriers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to Koimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church or the Luther Special Care Home would be appreciated by the family. Sotirios will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his family and many friends.

Prayer Services will take place at Saskatoon Funeral Home  on Wednesday evening March 2nd 2011 at 7:30 pm. Funeral Services will be celebrated by Fr. Michael Michael from Koimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church (8th St. and Dufferin Ave) Thursday, March 3rd 2011 at 1:00 pm with interment following in the Greek Orthodox section of Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.

Dangas, Hrissula
? – 1995

Hrissula Dangas passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 1995, at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Koimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church (1020 Dufferin Ave.) with interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery Greek Orthodox Section, officiated by Rev. Fr. John Nikolaou and Rev. Bohdan Demczuk. Prayers will be held at the Chapel of Saskatoon Funeral Home on Wednesday evening at 8:00 p.m.

Hrissula is survived by her loving husband Sotirios; son, Jim (Toula) Dangas and their children Sotirios, Hrissula, and Konstantinos; son, Markos (Dimetra) Dangas and their children Hrissula and Sophia, all of Saskatoon; and sister Theodora Andoneadis, brother George (Anthi) Delios and sister in-law Pashalina Dangas, all of Greece.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Tomas and Christos. Hrissula will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her family and many friends here in Canada and in Greece.

It was Hrissula’s wish that several Charities that she supported be remembered. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made care of the Salonika Inn for distribution to the following charities: St. Paul’s Hospital Surgery Dept., Urology Dept. Radiology, and Palliative Care Unit; The Royal University Hospital Endocrinology Dept., and Stoma Clinic; and The Cancer Clinic. Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.

Dedaskalou, Agamemnon (Menas)
1938 – 2006

It is with sadness the family announces that the death of Menas Dedaskalou occurred at Royal University Hospital on Wednesday April 12th, 2006, at the age of 68 years. Menas is survived by his loving wife Toula; son George and his wife Jolene and their children Tiana and Demetri; daughter Athenoula and her husband Brent Wilderman and their children Nicholas, Darius and Alexander; sister Matina Demourkas of California; and brothers Foti and Nick both of Greece. He was predeceased by his parents James and Athenoula, one brother Gus, and one sister Kiki. Menas emigrated to North America from Greece in 1954. He and Toula were married in Calgary in 1962. They have lived in Saskatoon since 1979.

Over these years, Menas has owned and operated the Mr. Steer and Sawyer’s restaurants. Memo cherished the happy times spent with his family. His grandchildren brought him much joy and were the light of this life. Memo loved to share stories about his children and grandchildren, and everyone knew how much he loved them and how proud he was of them. He liked the outdoors and particularly enjoyed the time he could spend hunting and fishing with friends. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his loving family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. The Funeral Service will take place on Sunday, April 16th. 2006, at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Fr. John Nikolaou at the Koimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church (1020 Dufferin Ave.) with interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Dedaskalou, Constantine (Gus)
1933 – 1988

The death of Constantinos (Gus) Dedaskalou, age 54 years, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan occurred in a local hospital on Thursday, June 20th, 1988. The Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 4th at 2:00 p.m. from Koimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, 1020 Dufferin Ave., Saskatchewan, conducted by Rev. Father John Nikolaou.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, 1702 20th St. W. Saskatoon, Sask. Surviving are his loving wife, Mariane; three brothers, Memmo (Toula) of Saskatoon, Fotis (Noula) and Nick (Sotiria) both of Ligourin, Greece; two sisters, Vasikia Oikonomidis of Athens, Greece, and Demourkas of Santa Barbara, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Athena Dedaskalou.

Gus was born in Ligourin, Greece on September 9th, 1933. In 1951, he immigrated to Canada settling in Fort William, Ontario. He worked there for a few years before moving to Vancouver. On January 12th, 1955, Gus married Mariane Dittmar in Vancouver, B.C. They moved to Saskatoon in 1957 and then to North Battleford in 1958 where he was the proprietor of the Snack Shop Restaurant for ten years. From there, they moved to Santa Barbara, California for four years, returning to Saskatoon in 1973 where he was the co-owner of Mr. Steer’s Restaurant with Nick Rizos until 1979.  From 1979 until his passing, he was one of the co- owners of Cousin Nik’s Restaurant in Saskatoon.

He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his family and many friends. Friends may meet with the family at Nikos Restaurant, 701 Cynthia St. (Across from the Travelodge) following the service.

Dedasklou (née Dittmar), Marianne
1930-2008

The death of Marianne Dedaskalou of Saskatoon occurred on September 15, 2008, at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon. She was born Marianne Dittmar on April 22, 1930, in Germany and came to Canada when she was 21. She married Constantinos (Gus) Dedaskalou on January 12, 1955, in Vancouver. Gus predeceased Marianne on June 20, 1988. Marianne is survived by her sister, Ursula Schroll who lives in Germany. At the request of Marianne, there will be no funeral or other memorial service.

Dedaskalou, Toula
Circa 1941 – 2023

     

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the sudden passing of my mother, Toula Dedaskalou, who left this world on Saturday, September 16, 2023.  She was 82 years old.

 She was a kind and loving mother, grandmother, wife, sister, and friend who touched the lives of all who knew her.  She will be always in our hearts and never forgotten.

 Rest in peace mama.

Dennis, Constantine (Connie) Avrandinis
Circa 1921 – 2000

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of a much-loved husband, father, and grandfather, Constantine (Connie) John Avrandinis Dennis. Constantine’s death occurred after a brief illness on December 22, 2000, at St. Paul’s Hospital with his family by his side.

Connie was born in Astros, Greece. He emigrated to Canada with his brother Peter in 1929. He followed his sister Helen and brother Don who earlier had arrived in Canada. Connie arrived in Weyburn, [worked at the Bluebird Tearoom], and continued his education. In 1931, he came to Saskatoon where he was employed by the Gem Cafe which was owned by his brother-in-law Jim Chrones. He was also employed as Assistant Manager at the Ritz Theatre, transferred to British Columbia for a short time and then [in 1936] came back to Saskatoon. He returned to work at the Gem Cafe as Night Manager.  

In 1943. Connie enlisted with the Canadian Navy, serving until 1946. After the war years, he entered info partnership with his brothers, Don and Peter, to operate the Picadilly Cafe in Swift Current.

In the early 50’s he went into partnership and opened the Shasta Cafe on 2nd Avenue in Saskatoon. It was during this time he met his future wife, Georgina. In the following years he proceeded to operate The Rendezvous and the Chicken Inn.

He was very involved in the sports community, sponsoring hockey teams and women’s basketball. Himself an active sportsman and lover of the outdoors, his favorite sports were boxing, golf, horseback riding and hunting. He was a member of the AHEPA Association and Royal Canadian Legion.

Later in life he became employed by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, retiring in 1980 after 15 years. Not one to sit still, early in his retirement he went back to work at his nephew Jack’s restaurant John’s Prime Rib. Later retirement years were spent travelling back to his homeland and enjoying his family and grandchildren.

Connie leaves to mourn his wife of many years, Georgina; son, John; daughter, Carol (Brent Hart); grandchildren, Matthew and Stephanie all of Saskatoon; brother, Peter Dennis of Vancouver; his nephews and niece, Jack Chrones of Saskatoon, Jim Chrones of Toronto, Dr. Kay Metrakes of Montreal, Antony and John Avrandinis of Greece; and numerous nephews and nieces. Connie was predeceased by his father, Yanni; his mother, Kaliope; brothers, George, Taso and Don; and sisters, Fedra, Matina and Helen Chrones.

At Connie’s request there will be no funeral. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Special thanks to the wonderful caring nurses of the Peritineal Renal Unit and ICU at St. Paul’s Hospital and also to Doctors R. Baltzan and J. Kappel. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Kidney Foundation, 1-2217 Hanselman Court. Saskatoon, S7L6A8.
